What TurbinePreview shows
TurbinePreview overlays proposed wind turbines onto
photographs and maps. Every turbine you see in a TurbinePreview image
is a computer-generated estimate, not an existing structure, unless
the image is clearly an unmodified photograph.
How the estimates are made, and their limits
Visualizations are computed from:
- Public elevation data (a terrain
surface model): its resolution is limited, and
vegetation and buildings count as ground — a view through or
over trees may differ from the estimate.
- Turbine layouts from planning documents and proponent
communications: each image names the layout version and
date it depicts. Proponents change layouts; always check the
named version against the current planning documents before
relying on an image. Where a proponent has not yet published a
proposed layout, a visualization may instead depict a
hypothetical layout we generated; such images
are clearly marked as hypothetical and depict no proponent's
proposal.
- Camera alignment: images are labelled either
aligned (matched to the photographed skyline)
or compass-grade (from device sensors only,
typically several degrees of bearing uncertainty). Focal
length, lens distortion, atmospheric refraction and earth
curvature are estimated, not measured.
The result is a good-faith estimate suitable for forming an
impression. It is not survey-grade, and small errors
in position, terrain or alignment can change whether a turbine (or how
much of it) appears above a ridgeline.
No advice
TurbinePreview does not provide planning, legal, valuation or other
professional advice. If you rely on an image — for example in a
submission to a planning authority — you do so at your own risk and
should verify it independently.
Other people's content
Photographs, manual alignments, comments and ratings shared by
users are those users' own views and work, not Hereabouts Pty Ltd's.
We do not verify them.
